Appeals court upholds 27-year sentence for Gatlinburg swindler

January 9th, 2012 1:42 pm by Staff Report

KNOXVILLE — There was no error by the federal judge who sentenced Gatlinburg swindler Dennis Bolze to more than 27 yeas in prison, a federal appeals court panel has ruled.

"Bolze perpetrated fraud for more than six years, devastated more than 100 victims, and misappropriated millions of dollars," 6th U.S. Circuit Court Judge Jane B. Stranch wrote in her opinion for the three-judge panel that reviewed the case. The opinion was released today.

The sentence of 27 years and two months imposed by U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Varlan was reasonable, especially given the age and vulnerability of a number of Bolze's victims, the appellate court panel held.
