Hale, Allen lead Greenies over D-B

BRISTOL -- Jaylen Allen and Shannon Hale aren’t in the Big Eight Conference anymore, but they can still cause a lot of problems for Dobyns-Bennett.
The Science Hill transfers combined to score 19 points helping Christ School of Arden, N.C. to a 68-49 victory over the Indians in Wednesday’s late quarterfinal of the 29th annual Arby’s Classic at Viking Hall.
“It was nice to come up here. It was fun,” said Allen, who had 11 points and eight rebounds. “I feel like it’s coming together and the team is getting a little better every game.
The Greenies (13-2) led just 14-10 at the end of one quarter, but pushed their advantage way out to 39-19 at the half. Jerome Hairston was the leading scorer for Christ School with 17 points. Will Weeks had nine points, while Hale added eight points on the offensive end and two blocks on the defensive end.
“It was definitely good to come up here and play them again,” Hale said.
Dobyns-Bennett (6-5) fell further behind in the third quarter before coming back to make it 56-36 heading into the final period.
The Indians tried to chip away at the lead, but wasn’t able to get the margin under 15 points. Hale added a two-handed slam midway through the fourth quarter to put an exclamation point on the night.
D-B head coach Charlie Morgan was certainly impressed with the Asheville-area team.
“This is the best we’ve played top to bottom,” Morgan said. “I felt like we competed the whole time, but we were outmanned at every spot.”
Devaun Swafford and Tyleke Love scored 11 points each to lead Dobyns-Bennett. Cory Combs added another 10 for the Indians.
Christ School advanced to face Christ Presbyterian Academy of Nashville in Thursday’s semifinal round. Dobyns-Bennett fell to a loser’s bracket matchup against Urspring, Germany.
Christ School said a key against CPA would be a good rebounding effort from Hale, something the 6-foot-8 junior agreed with.
“I’m going to focus,” Hale said. “I just have to get in there and do what I can do.”
