Judge's misconduct puts Knox widow's murder conviction in doubt

KNOXVILLE — The murder conviction of Raynella Dossett Leath is among the cases at risk of reversal because of Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner's drug addiction and off the bench misconduct.

His misconduct has already led Special Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood to order new trials for four people convicted in the torture and murder of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.

Though many other convictions dating to 2007 in Baumgartner's court are at risk, that does not necessarily mean that all of them will have to be thrown out, according to two law school professors.
