ELIZABETHTON — A burglar stole several thousand dollars worth of cigarettes and money from the Sunshine Market at 1033 Old Bristol Highway late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
The burglary was discovered by employee Willie Faye Woods when she came to open the store for the day at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. Deputy Larry Vaughn of the Carter County Sheriff’s Department said a rock had been thrown through a small drive-through window at the rear of the building. Fragments of glass were tracked along the back of the counter and the trail led to a small office.
Vaughn said the thief had searched the office and a cash register drawer that had been stored in a desk had been emptied of its contents. Vaughn said the store’s owner, Roy Hyder said the thief also stole cartons and loose packs of cigarettes with a total value of between $3,000 to $5,000. Approximately $300 in cash and $600 in rolled coins were also stolen.
