December hiking schedules

Old Timers Hiking Club

Dec. 5 — A strenuous 5-mile hike on the Bays Mountain Range, starting at the Adcoxes’ driveway with a hot lunch at Lamar’s house after the hike. Leader, Lamar Adcox, 234-0296.

Dec. 7 — Cross Mountain to Bulldog Hollow via Holston Mountain Trail. This strenuous, 9.3-mile hike begins on Cross Mountain, where the AT crosses TN-91 and will attempt an exit on the Josiah trail for some bushwhacking. Leader, Dave McMillin, 913-2345.

Dec. 12 — A 6.6 mile-hike to Cherry Gap shelter from Tenn. Highway 107 and back. Breakfast will be at Clarence’s. Leader, Eric Noblet, 202-3595.

Dec. 14 — An 8-mile moderate hike on the AT from Shook Branch to Pond Flats and back. Leader, Ernie Hartford, 543-1276.

Dec. 19 — North Carolina Arboretum. Asheville, N.C. Hiker’s choice — up to 10 miles. Leader, Jerry Jones, 282-2199.

Dec. 21 — A 10.5-mile strenuous hike on the AT from Harrison Lane Road to Dennis Cove. Leader, John Parks, 773-9643.

Dec. 26 — We will view the historical pioneer movie at Sycamore Shoals State Park in Elizabethton (about 20 minutes), then hike the old and new trails there. Two and two-tenths easy miles. Leader, Jerry Jones, 282-2199.

Dec. 28 — A strenuous 10-mile hike from Hickey Fork to the Viking Mountain cell towers with a loop back to the cars down the newly rebuilt road. Leader, Howard Guinn, 753-4072 or 741-7755.

The group leaves Covenant Presbyterian Church, 603 Sunset Drive, Johnson City, each Monday and Wednesday promptly at 8 a.m. Participation in club activities carries with it the obligation to hold the club and its representatives free of liability for individual safety. Johnson City Hiking Club

Dec. 3 — A strenuous 12-mile hike south on the AT from the Nolichucky River to No Business Knob Shelter and back. Leave McDonald’s in Erwin at 8 a.m. Leader, Howard Guinn, 753-4072.

Dec. 9, 10, 11 — This will be the club’s yearly trip to Pickett State Park to spend two nights in the park cabins and hike on Saturday and Sunday with Cindy Strang leading the hikes. James Price will be meeting any interested in car pooling or just having someone to lead to the park at Arby’s at 1 p.m. on Dec. 9. Call Price at 213-0042. Joy Cook will be doing the cabin rental. We will hike on the Sheltowee Trace trail. On Sunday we will hike in the morning at Pickett State Park — an easy 7-mile loop and finish in time to pack up and eat at our favorite Bacaras’ Restaurant for Sunday brunch.

Dec. 17 — Moderate to strenuous 7-mile loop hike on Holston Mountain. Meet at Long John Silver’s at 9 a.m. Leader, Joel Zabel, 926-3587.

Dec. 31 — An 8.4-mile moderate to strenuous hike on the AT from Iron Mountain Gap to Greasy Creek Gap and Back. Leave McDonald’s in Erwin at 8 a.m. Leader, Howard Guinn, 753-4072.

Jan. 1 — Strenuous 10-mile New Year’s Day hike in the Mount Rogers area. Meet at Kroger at 8 a.m. or at Mountain Sports in Bristol, Va., on the east side of US Highway 11E at 8:45 a.m. Leader, Phyllis Cairns, 239-6058, or She prefers email contact.
