Knoxville police chief: Officers are trained to stop threat, not wound

KNOXVILLE — Shooting the gun out of a bad guy's hand only happens in the movies, Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch said Thursday as he addressed questions about the shooting and killing of an armed shoplifting suspect earlier this week.
An investigation continues into the lethal shooting of one of two detained suspects inside a security room at the South Knoxville Walmart on Tuesday night. Zachary Blaine Russell, 21, was killed after he allegedly pulled a handgun on two Knoxville Police Department officers.
Officer John Mays, who fired the shots, and his partner, Officer Tolliver Robertson, remain on routine administrative leave.
