Roan Mountain State Park offering half-price cabins through winter

ROAN MOUNTAIN — A warm cabin surrounded by trees, and maybe even a layer of fresh snow, is the perfect place to unplug and unwind for an early winter getaway.
And thanks to a special promotion offered by Tennessee State Parks, visitors to Roan Mountain State Park may escape to one of 30 cabins for half price through March 31. Though the offer excludes holidays and is based on availability, Parks Superintendent Pat Gagan says there are still opportunities for anxious individuals to take a break from the daily grind.
“It’s a different world here,” Gagan said. “It’s the best way to enjoy this winter wonderland.”
Park officials have already observed two snow showers since last month. With temperatures 15 degrees cooler than the surrounding area, there’s a good chance for more white flakes in the coming weeks.
Those who book a cabin at Roan Mountain must ask for the 50 percent discount, which is good for every day of the week. Typical rates before the applied winter price promotion are $126.23 Sunday through Thursday and $143.44 Friday and Saturday.
Each cabin has a kitchen, full bathroom, wood burning stove and gas/electric heat, but no televisions or cell phone service.
“It’s a respite from the 24-hour pace of urban life,” Gagan said.
The cabins sleep 5-7 people, depending on what buildings are available. Taking advantage of this peaceful connection with nature gives visitors the opportunity to stay put, but some prefer to call it a temporary home base. Gagan says many Roan Mountain cabin guests make sure to get out to one of the nearby ski resorts, while some head toward Blowing Rock and Boone, N.C.
The winter discount applies to those who reserve a minimum two-night stay and is perfect for locals looking for a change of scenery without clocking too many miles on the odometer. Roan Mountain State Park is about 30 miles from Johnson City and is open year- round.
Gagan recommends making reservations as soon as possible, given that this is “one of the best deals” the state has offered in several years. The discount also applies to a number of additional Tennessee State Park villas, cabins and inns.
