Takoma receives high ratings in patient safety

November 14th, 2011 3:28 pm by Staff Report

For the third year in a row, Takoma Regional Hospital has received the highest ratings possible in three key areas of patent safety, including preventing medication errors, according to the national Leapfrog Group’s “Consumer Guide on Health 2011-2012.” This year, only five hospitals in all of Tennessee earned this rating: Takoma Regional Hospital, Vanderbilt University Hospital, Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Skyline Medical Center.
Other areas of recognition include categories of “never events,” or incidents that should never occur while in a hospital, such as a surgery on the wrong body part, and “steps to avoid harm,” which means procedures are in place to reduce 17 common, preventable medical mistakes. Leapfrog is considered a standard for comparing hospitals’ performance on the national standards of safety, quality, and efficiency that are most relevant to consumers.
