Crystal Robertson, an extension agent for Unicoi County, was recently honored at the National Extension Association for Family and Consumer Sciences 2011 annual session.
Robertson received the first place National and Region Radio/Podcast Communications Award at the conference. Robertson was recognized for the “Energizing Unicoi County” Public Service Announcements, which aired on the local WEMB radio station and were read by Unicoi County 4-H’ers, to provide listeners with information on energy efficiency and healthy housing concerns.
The Radio Communications Award recognizes excellence in communication through an educational or a promotional feature between one and 15 minutes in length. The radio program was in association with a larger award-winning project with Unicoi County 4-H, titled Energizing Unicoi County. This project received the Junior Level School of the Year in Tennessee for exemplary leadership in energy education from the Tennessee Office of Energy Policy and the National Energy Education Development Project. Throughout last school year, sixth- and seventh-grade 4-H’ers conducted experiments to better understand energy use, efficiency, and new energy technologies. They also reached out to the Unicoi County community to actively teach about energy and energy decisions as a way to save money at home.
