Shrubbery stops purse snatching

Two Bristol men where charged with various offenses stemming from an attempted purse theft at a local retailer Sunday evening.
According to a victim in a Johnson City police report, Cody S. Smith, 18, 710 VI Ranch Road, Bristol, grabbed a woman’s purse from her shopping cart at Rugged Warehouse, 3211 Peoples St., around 3 p.m. Sunday.
She reportedly chased Smith and another man, Brett L. Dixon, 19, 207 Cannon Ave., Bristol, out of the store.
Smith got stuck in some shrubbery outside of the store. The victim approached him and Smith returned the wallet and apologized for taking it, according to the report.
Upon obtaining identification, Smith first gave the name of a man whose driver’s license he had in his pocket.
Police found plastic straws and a small pipe in Smith’s possession. He also had a signed check and an identification card later determined stolen in Kingsport.
Dixon also had plastic straws and what was believed to be 1.6 grams of marijuana.
Both men were charged with theft from a building and possession of drug paraphernalia. Smith was also charged with identity theft. Dixon was additionally charged with simple possession.
They were being held in the Washington County Detention Center.
