KINGSPORT — Vernon Roberts was allegedly the brains behind the burglary scheme: He'd use a brick to shatter a window at Minute Market on East Center Street, while a woman he recruited would act as lookout from their front porch directly across the road.
But when the call of "car" rang out and Roberts ran from the store, according to an arrest report, he inadvertently darted into the path of what happened to be a passing police cruiser. Still totting brick in hand for officers to clearly see, a brief foot chase ensued before alleged burglar and accomplice were arrested.
Roberts, 35, of 1109 East Center Street, Kingsport, is charged with attempted burglary, evading arrest and resisting arrest. Marty K. Willis, 33, of the same address, is charged with criminal intent to commit burglary.
