KINGSPORT — Mayor Dennis Phillips wants synthetic marijuana off the shelves in the Model City, saying the substance is becoming a growing problem that the city of Kingsport needs to address.
In order to do that, Phillips has requested City Attorney Mike Billingsley draft an ordinance to ban the sale or possession of synthetic marijuana within the city limits. The proposed ordinance is expected to come before the Board of Mayor and Aldermen at its Nov. 15 meeting.
“We have had numerous complaints about the sale of synthetic marijuana within the city. The police tell us their hands are tied as it is legal and there appears to be nothing we can presently do to stop this from happening,” Phillips said. “This is a very serious problem, and we need to devote whatever resources we have to get these places out of our city.”
