'Runaway' boxcars travel through three counties

Two “runaway” boxcars that had become disconnected from a Norfolk Southern engine Tuesday night traveled through three counties before coming to a stop in Piney Flats, according to dispatchers with Washington County 911.
After traveling through downtown Johnson City, Carter County and into Sullivan County, the two boxcars began traveling backward until they came to rest at the intersection of Piney Flats Road and Wade Bulla Road about 9:50 p.m., 911 supervisor Greg Banks said.
The origin of the boxcars was unknown, and initial reports indicated there was as many as four runaway cars on the tracks.
Before the cars came to a stop, dispatchers said Norfolk Southern had stationed an engine near the Watauga River in order to intercept them.
No injuries or accidents were reported.
Norfolk Southern officials weren’t available for comment Tuesday night.
