ERWIN — A Unicoi County man was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with aggravated assault for allegedly cutting another local man following an altercation.
Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Ronnie Adkins said two men, John Casteel and Bernie J. Evans, became involved in a physical altercation at a residence on Dewey Corn Circle in Erwin on Tuesday afternoon, during which Casteel allegedly cut Evans across the chest with a knife. Adkins also said a baseball bat was used in the altercation, though he did not say to what extent.
Adkins said the UCSD received a report that Evans had been cut around 4:45 p.m. Adkins said Casteel attempted to flee, but was located hiding in the woods by Lt. Jimmy Erwin’s K-9 around 15 minutes after the report came in. Adkins said Casteel was located around one-fourth of a mile from the Dewey Corn Circle residence.
Evans suffered a serious laceration across his chest and attempted to drive himself to the hospital, Adkins said. Adkins said Evans managed to make it to the Rock Creek area of Unicoi County, where a friend met Evans and took him to the hospital.
As of Tuesday evening, Evans was still being treated at the Franklin Woods Community Hospital in Johnson City, Adkins said.
The incident, including what led to the altercation between the two men, is still being investigated by the UCSD, Adkins said.
