Johnson City police arrested two men Friday after getting a tip that they were buying meth-making ingredients at a local retail pharmacy and finding drugs in their possession, according to a news release.
Police caught up with Steven E. Hale, 38, 140 Mohler Road, Gray, and Michael T. Smith, 36, 154 Creek Road, Erwin, about 6:30 p.m. after finding them at a second pharmacy.
Officers went to the CVS Pharmacy on South Roan on a report that two men had separately purchased pseudoephedrine and lithium batteries but were traveling in the same car. Hale and Smith already had left CVS when police got there, but they were found less than a mile away at the Walgreens at South Roan and University Parkway buying more pseudoephedrine, police said.
Police found that Smith and Hale both had schedule II drugs, and Hale had a small amount of methamphetamine, according to the news release.
Both were charged with promotion of methamphetamine manufacture and simple possession of schedule II narcotics. Smith also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
Hale and Smith were jailed at the Washington County Detention Center pending Sessions Court appearances Monday. Hale's bond was $11,000, and Smith's was $12,000.
