October 5th, 2011 11:50 am by Staff Report

MAYNARDVILLE — A Blount County man drowned Tuesday in Norris Reservoir while trying to board his drifting boat, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency reported today.
Terrence L. Newcomb, 63, Rockford, disappeared in the lake after swimming out to retrieve his boat that had drifted away from the bank.
About 5 p.m., Newcomb and another man got out of their boat on the bank of Clear Creek to clean some fish.  Newcomb noticed the boat had drifted some 30 to 40 yards off the bank and swam out to retrieve it.
According to the other man, Newcomb swam to the boat and was trying to climb aboard over the motor.  Newcomb fell back into the water and did not resurface.
Union County Rescue Squad recovered the body about 8:30 p.m. The body was then taken to UT Medical Center by Union County EMS.
