Science Hill turns attention to district volleyball tourney

October 5th, 2011 10:24 am by Staff Report

Science Hill closed out the volleyball regular season with a flourish Tuesday night, defeating Daniel Boone 3-0 at the Topper Palace.

The Lady ‘Toppers won by scores of 25-17, 25-18, 25-20 and secured a home match for the first round of the district tournament next week. With a Big Eight Conference record of 9-5 (28-12 overall), they will likely be the No. 4 seed, behind Sullivan South, Dobyns-Bennett and Tennessee High.

“This group has exceeded my expectations for this year,” said coach Louise Stallworth. “I’m pleased with how they handled me coming in and changing the system. They picked it up quickly, even though we started slowly in conference. But we picked things up the last half. We beat D-B and Tennessee High last week.”

Stallworth said South is a strong favorite in District 1-AAA, especially on its home floor. The Rebels will play host to the tournament after first-round matches at the home sites of the four highest seeds.

“South is very good,” said Stallworth, “but we actually played them real tough. It was 3-1 both times.”

Science Hill has six seniors on the roster, but only two start. Stallworth also starts two sophomores and two juniors.

Maggie Henderson collected 22 assists against Boone. Anjali Reddy had seven kills, while Jackie Murphy had five and Jessica Norris four. Brittany Bible had seven digs and Danielle Turner five.

Hannah Williams served three aces.
