Up for shooting hoops? City Parks and Rec holding registrations for youth, adult basketball leagues

Fall weather may have everyone clamoring to be outdoors, but soon enough, it will be time to pile in the gym for basketball games.

Johnson City Parks and Recreation is holding registrations for youth and adult basketball leagues. Boys and girls ages 6-15 can play on youth teams grouped by city schools. Signups cost $25 for city residents and

$30 for non-city residents with an additional $10 late charge for those who registered after Oct. 29.

Parks and Recreation Athletic Director James Ellis expects more than 80 youth teams to form and begin practicing on the week of Nov. 1, followed by games starting Nov. 28 with an optional holiday classic during winter break.

“In our program, we don’t have any tryouts,” Ellis said. “Every child that registers plays and we provide everyone in the league with a reversible jersey to wear.”

The youth basketball program is broken down into leagues for ages 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13 and 14-15, as of Sept. 30. Registrations can be completed online at www. myjcparks.org or forms are available at Johnson City schools and at the Athletic Office in the Winged Deer Park Tower Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

In order to get the league up and running, Ellis says there’s a need for volunteer coaches, as well as officials, gym attendants and scorekeepers. An organizational meeting for interested coaches will be held at the Winged Deer Park Tower on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and a meeting for interested officials, attendants and scorekeepers will be held at the same location on Oct. 13 at 5:30 p.m.

And for those looking to participate in the adult program, there are a number of leagues available — men’s industrial, church and open divisions, plus leagues for women and senior men.

Registration for the men’s teams is $400 and includes 14 games and a tournament. The women’s and senior groups cost $200 per team and play seven games plus a tournament. Though the additional women’s and senior leagues are offered, Ellis says people rarely take advantage of them.

“Wives and girlfriends who go out and support their guys say ‘Hey, we need a league of our own.’ Well we’ve got it for you, now take advantage of it,” Ellis said.

Coaches in the adult league will meet at the Winged Deer Park Tower Monday at 6:30 p.m.
