Leg lifters: Kingsport Farmers Market seeks guidance on banning dogs

September 12th, 2011 9:57 am by Matthew Lane

KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Farmers Market is seeking guidance from state agriculture and county health officials on whether to prohibit or ban dogs from the property during normal market hours.

During last week’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen work session elected officials brought the issue up in light of a recent Times-News letter to the editor where Harry Carter of Blountville said that during a recent trip to the Kingsport Farmers Market, he and his family found the market to be more of a dog park than a place to buy food.

Carter wrote in his letter that many people held dogs in their arms above the tables, other dogs wagged their tails or drooled over the fruits and vegetables and in one instance a dog lifted its leg and sprayed a box of vegetables.
