WISE, Va. — Barter Theatre, a professional, repertory theater in Abingdon, is now offering satellite classes in Blowing Rock, N.C. This is the first time Barter professionals will teach classes in Western North Carolina, although satellite classes are a growing trend for the education department of BarterTheatre.
Karen Sabo, director of education for Barter, feels it is important for Barter’s artists to give back in this way. “As a regional theatre, it’s important for us to serve the community and education is a big part of our mission. Because we live in a rural community, we thought it would give kids in surrounding towns and counties a better opportunity if we came to them.”
Registrations are now being accepted for two different four-week classes beginning Oct. 4 and Oct. 25. Classes will be held Tuesday afternoons at the Hayes Performing Arts Center and taught by Sabo.
“The skills picked up can be helpful in community theatre, church productions, school theatre and also in real life. The classes teach kids to be good listeners, clear speakers, to make strong choices, commit well and play well with others. So we feel they are extremely helpful and fun for any child,” Sabo said.
For third- to sixth-graders, “It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane ... It’s Improve” will be offered on 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Tuition is $65. “Improv teaches kids to commit, listen and embrace the present. It’s an involving and exciting class in which children will learn the freedom of silliness,” Sabo said.
For seventh- through 12th-graders, “Creating a Character” will be offered on 4:45-6 p.m. Tuesdays. “Using your body and voice to transform into another person is one of the most magical aspects of acting,” Sabo said. This class will teach students how to create complex and distinctive characterizations.
