A fire that heavily damaged a vacant Valley Forge convenience store late Wednesday night is under investigation by the Carter County Sheriff’s Department, but Capt. Tom Smith said it does not appear that foul play was involved.
“We still have to go in and check around when the ashes cool, but it does not appear to be suspicious,” Smith said.
The vacant store at 4259 U.S. Highway 19E, Elizabethton, is owned by Roger Forbes, who was out of town at the time of the fire.
“He was getting it ready to try and sell,” Smith said.
The store was the scene of a gruesome murder in 1993 when a clerk was stabbed during a robbery.
