Defensive miscues set stage for Twins loss

ELIZABETHTON — The Elizabethton Twins were their own worst enemies as the Appalachian League playoffs opened on Wednesday night.
The Twins committed four errors, leading to eight unearned runs, as the Bluefield Blue Jays won the first game of the best-of-three wild card round 11-3 at Joe O’Brien Field.
Chris Hawkins and Daniel Arcilla each had three-run doubles for the Blue Jays, who won the East Division with a 40-28 record.
Kevin Pillar, who won the Appalachian League batting title by a fraction over Danville’s Brandon Drury, went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for Bluefield.
Matt Koch drove in two runs for the Twins.
Elizabethton was 42-26 during the regular season, second in the West Division behind Johnson City
Game 2 is tonight at Bluefield.
The winner of the series will take on t he winner of the Johnson City-Danville series for the title. Johnson City is the defending league champion.
