Asheville mother: 'Ghost' killed daughters

ASHEVILLE — A woman accused of killing her two daughters with a hatchet told police a ghost was responsible for the slayings, according to court papers obtained Monday.

Naiyana Gauri Patel, 33, was recovering from self-inflicted injuries at Mission Hospital. She repeatedly hit herself in the head with the hatchet used to kill 8-year-old Jiya and 4-year-old Piya Patel.

She’s charged with first-degree murder in the slayings. Detectives have not had a chance to speak with her, Lt. Wally Welch said.

Her husband, Lalji Patel, found her and the two girls inside their home on Shannon Drive about 10 a.m. Saturday.
