40-acre wildfire burning in Roane County

August 30th, 2011 10:20 pm by Staff Report

KINGSTON — State and local fire crews are battling a 40-acre wildfire near two Roane County schools this afternoon, officials said.

The fire, reported just after noon, is in the vicinity of Midway High and Midway Elementary schools along Loudon Highway. Neither was evacuated today, said Scott Stout, deputy director of the Roane County Office of Emergency Services.

Nathan Waters, assistant district forester with the Tennessee Division of Forestry, said the blaze is one of a half-dozen of varying size that state fire crews have responded to since Friday — an unusual trend for this time of year.
