The Johnson City Cardinals return home today to conclude the regular season with a three-game series against Burlington, which begins at 6 p.m.
Johnson City (42-23) has clinched its second straight Appalachian League West Division and a No. 1 seed in the playoffs, and has a magic number of one to clinch the division outright. The Elizabethton Twins (39-26) are three games back with three to play.
Elizabethton needs one victory or a loss by Kingsport to clinch the West’s second playoff berth. The Bluefield Blue Jays and Danville Braves, who are each 38-27, have clinched the playoff spots in the East. They conclude the regular season with a three-game series in Danville, Va.
The playoffs begin Wednesday when division winners visit the second-place teams from the other division. Games two and three (if necessary) will be hosted by the division winners.
Danville beat Johnson City 5-2 on Saturday in Danville. Lucas La Point (4-3) recorded the victory while lowering his ERA to 1.93 with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Fellow right-hander John Cornely stuck out six in three shutout innings for his first save.
Nick Ahmed and Nick DeSantiago each drove in two runs for the Braves.
Johnson City first baseman David Washington was 3-for-4 with a double. Cardinals starter Jose Pasen (4-4) allowed three runs – two earned – in 5 2/3 innings.
