ELIZABETHTON — The Tennessee Highway Patrol has identified the woman injured in Monday’s head-on collision on U.S. Highway 19E in Roan Mountain as Joyce Whitehead, 53, Roan Mountain.
The investigators from the THP’s Critical Incident Response Team also said the cruiser driven by Constable Leonard Johnson, 57, crossed over the center line and struck Whitehead’s oncoming 1997 Dodge Caravan.
In their preliminary report, the investigators said the accident happened in the Crab Orchard section of Roan Mountain as Johnson was heading southbound in his 1998 Ford Crown Victoria. Both Johnson and Whitehead were airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center for treatment.
Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes had been to the hospital on Monday and said Johnson had suffered multiple broken ribs and a compound fracture of an ankle. He said Whitehead had suffered a broken leg.
