KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Mets jumped all over starter Benjamin Freeman and handed the Appalachian League West Division-leading Johnson City Cardinals a 7-4 loss Tuesday night at Hunter-Wright Stadium.
With one out in the third inning, the Mets used six back-to-back hits to score six runs off Freeman, including a two-run double by Juan Carlos Gamboa and base-clearing double by Julio Concepcion.
Freeman (4-3) was pulled after Concepcion’s double. He gave up six runs on seven hits in 2 1 /3 innings.
The Cards, who led 2-0 going into the third, couldn’t respond to the big inning. Roberto De La Cruz hit a two-run homer in the sixth, chasing K-Mets starter Jacob Lugo (4-1). Tyler Rahmatulla hit an RBI double and later scored on a single by Anthony Garcia in the first.
The Cards, at 36-18, still have a solid six-game lead in the division despite the loss, which was just their second in the past eight games.
The K-Mets are tied for second place with the Elizabethton Twins, who also won Tuesday, defeating Bristol 5-1.
The teams will continue the three-game series in Johnson City, with games tonight and Thursday night at Cardinal Park.
