Police: Man used stolen ring to propose

August 16th, 2011 8:30 am by Staff Report

ELIZABETHTON — The Elizabethton Police Department arrested a man they said confessed to stealing a diamond ring that he then used to propose to his girlfriend.
Robby Mathes was charged with theft over $1,000 following an investigation by Detectives Matt Croy and David Peters.
Croy said the ring was the property of Betty Linville. She told investigators Aug. 9 that the ring contained a half-carat diamond with eight smaller diamonds surrounding it. It was valued at $1,100. At the time she filed her complaint, Linville said she suspected Mathes, who had completed some work at her residence at the time the ring went missing.
Croy and Peters located the ring acting on Linville’s suspicions.
Croy said Mathes confessed he took the ring from Linville’s home.
