August 10th, 2011 2:14 pm by Staff Report

CHATTANOOGA (AP) — A Chattanooga policeman has been relieved of duty while the department investigates a juvenile detainee's assault complaint.

A Chattanooga Police Department statement Wednesday said its internal affairs and major crimes units are investigating an assault allegation made against veteran officer Mario Cunningham.

The statement said a 17-year-old male juvenile was allegedly assaulted by Cunningham on Sunday while in juvenile detention.

Cunningham has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

A police spokesman said Wednesday he could not comment or elaborate further on Cunningham's status.
