Search continues for store robber

August 9th, 2011 10:09 pm by John Thompson

ELIZABETHTON — The Elizabethton Police Department continues to search for a man who robbed Milligan Grocery around 9:30 p.m. Monday.
The store clerk told Investigator James Sexton that she was cleaning in the back of the store as she was preparing to close for the night when she heard someone say “Hey.”
The clerk said she came from the back and saw a man holding a small black pistol. He demanded money and the clerk complied, giving him the money in the cash drawer.
After taking the money, the clerk said the man ran out of the store, running toward Gov. Alf Taylor Road.
A witness said he was driving on Gov. Alf Taylor Road and nearly struck the robber with his vehicle. He said a man wearing a ski mask and plaid shirt jumped from the tree line. After he was nearly hit, the witness said the man jumped back into the tree line.
EPD Capt. Mike Merritt soon came to the scene and took over the investigation.
The clerk said the man was wearing a black ski mask, blue plaid shirt and dark jeans. She said he was about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, weighed between 150 and 160 pounds and had a small body build.
Anyone with information about the robbery should call the EPD at 542-4141. To submit a tip anonymously, call 542-7574.
