Student cut on first day of school in East Tennessee

TELLICO PLAINS (AP) — Police in Monroe County say a 16-year-old boy is being held after going after another student with a knife at Tellico Plains High School.

The incident occurred Monday, the first day of classes in the Monroe County public schools, according to The Knoxville News Sentinel (

A school resource officer saw the boy carrying a knife and chasing a 17-year-boy through the school gymnasium. When the officer shouted for the assailant to halt, he continued to run for a moment, then stopped and dropped the knife.

The older boy was first treated by a school nurse for cuts to his arm and hand and then taken to an emergency room by his father.

Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Jennifer Bledsoe said the suspect was taken to a juvenile facility.
