Man charged with pulling pistol on girlfriend

August 5th, 2011 10:36 pm by Staff Reports

ELIZABETHTON — A man was arrested Thursday night by the Carter County Sheriff’s Department after he allegedly held a pistol to a woman’s throat and threatened to kill her.
Jonas Earl Benfield, 28, 189 Old Stoney Creek Road, No. 3, was arrested by Sgt. Dean Jones on a charge of aggravated assault under the Domestic Violence Law.
Jones said he went to Benfield’s residence at 9:30 p.m. When he knocked on the door, he was met by Misty Thomason, who told him she had been arguing with Benfield, who was her boyfriend, because she had come home late.
Thomason said the argument escalated and Benfield pulled a pistol and placed it to her throat. Jones then talked with Benfield, who showed Jones he had placed the pistol on top of the water heater. Jones identified the gun as a Ruger .45-caliber automatic.
Benfield is scheduled to answer the charges in Sessions Court on Sept. 2.
