BRISTOL, Va. — Police have charged two Bristol men for the murder of their elderly neighbor, who was found dead in her apartment earlier this month.
Anthony C. Jemes Jr., 28, 173 Second St., Apt. G, and Daniel Anthony Henry, 18, 173 Second St., Apt. I, were both charged with capital murder and robbery following their arrests late Tuesday night.
The body of Annie B. Smith, 86, was found in Springdale Village Apartments on July 10 when her minister went to check on her. Police Capt. Maynard Ratcliff said Jemes and Henry lived in the same building where Smith found. Investigators had questioned several people in the complex about the case, Ratcliff said, and Jemes and Henry knew “more about it than if they weren’t there.”
Preliminary autopsy results indicated that Smith died from asphyxiation, Ratcliff said.
The capital murder charges stemmed from the fact that Smith was killed during the commission of the robbery, Ratcliff said, but he could not elaborate further on what was taken from the apartment or offer further details on the case under instructions from the Commonwealth attorney.
Both men were held without bond at the Bristol Jail.
Bristol, Va., Crimesolvers, Inc., had offered a $1,000 reward to anyone who providing information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
