Football schedules have been released by the TSSAA, and there are some interesting matchups set for Week Zero.
The Aug. 19 contests include a game with a great deal of local interest as Daniel Boone travels to take on Elizabethton. The Trailblazers have a record of 1-24 in the all-time series against the Cyclones.
However, Boone won the last meeting, a 35-28 playoff decision in 2005.
Another big tilt is Science Hill traveling to play defending Class 4A state champion Greeneville. The Hilltoppers were in the same conference as the Greene Devils back in the early 1970s, but they haven’t played in 26 years. Their last meeting was a 1985 playoff encounter — where the Hilltoppers rolled up a 35-6 victory.
There are a trio of Big Eight-Three Rivers inter-conference matchups, including Johnson County hitting the road to play Tennessee High, and Volunteer playing host to Sullivan North. Also, Happy Valley will play Sullivan Central for the first time since 1968. The Cougars won that game 27-13 in their first-ever football season.
Other games involving Big Eight teams are David Crockett playing host to Sullivan East, Dobyns-Bennett traveling to play Knox Farragut, and Sullivan South hitting the road to take on Enka, N.C.
Rounding out the Class AA schedule, Unicoi County plays host to South Greene. And in the Class A ranks, Unaka visits Chuckey-Doak while North Greene is at home to play Tri-Cities Christian.
n Cloudland opens in Week 1 at Coalfield while Hampton’s first game is a home encounter with rival Johnson County.
The Bulldogs and Longhorns are the only teams in the state who play each other twice. They play again in Week 5 at Johnson County.
Week 10 falls on Oct. 28 this year, and the first round of the playoffs will be held on Nov. 4.
State-title games are Dec. 1-3.
n Science Hill and Daniel Boone have Week 5 as their open date. David Crockett sits out Week 1.
Elizabethton has a Week 9 open date while Happy Valley is off in Week 7. Johnson County has Week 3 off while Unicoi County sits out Week 6.
Unaka won’t play in Week 5.
n There are 324 football-playing schools in Tennessee. Of those, 279 (or 86 percent) are playing a Week Zero game.
The total number of football games on the schedule this year is 1,408. Of those, 967 are regional games.
n Kentucky is the most popular choice for an out-of-state opponent. TSSAA teams will play Bluegrass State teams 21 times this year.
Second on the list is Mississippi (14), followed by Virginia (9), North Carolina (6), Alabama (3), Georgia (2) and Texas (1).
Three of the Virginia teams are on Sullivan North’s schedule: Coeburn, J.J. Kelly and Pound.
n Some teams across the state were left with nine-game schedules for 2011, but none are from this area.
On that list are Munford, South Pittsburg, Memphis Douglass, Chatt. McCallie, Chatt. Howard, Franklin County, St. Benedict, Greenback and Tellico Plains.
n Science Hill landed a pair of players on the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association All-State team.
Daniel Norris, a left-handed pitcher and outfielder was chosen to the first team as a two-way player. He was joined by Dobyns-Bennett catcher Nathan Millsap.
Science Hill infielder Zach Thompson was a second-team pick while Tennessee High outfielder Stephen Mullins was also chosen to the second team.
