JACKSON (AP) — Police in Jackson say the shooting death of a retirement home resident was accidental.
Officers answered a call from the Jackson Oaks Senior Living Community on Wednesday afternoon and arrived to find a man outside his apartment, shot in the chest.
Authorities say 68-year-old Claude Vantreese was taken to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital where he later died.
Vantreese had told a staff member who came to his aid that he was cleaning his gun when it discharged. Police say a gun cleaning kit was found inside the apartment.
There were no other injuries at the retirement home. Police concluded Vantreese's death was accidental.
