Underwear-clad man leads police on chase

July 11th, 2011 10:00 pm by Staff Reports

A city man who attempted to evade officers while wearing only underwear and a pair of flip-flops was arrested Sunday, according to a Johnson City police report.
John F. Landers II, 22, 2206 Hicks Road, was served with an outstanding warrant for aggravated assault under domestic violence and charged with evading arrest after police responded to a domestic disturbance.
When officers arrived, a man — later identified as Landers — and an unnamed woman were screaming at each other. After seeing the officers, Landers fled on foot through his backyard, police said.
Neighbors told police they saw Landers running in the Embreeville Road area wearing only his underwear and flip-flops. Landers later called 911 via his cell phone, which dispatchers used to locate him in a wooded area a few blocks away from his residence.
While completing paperwork, the officers had to leave the booking room. Landers then reportedly attempted to hide cigarettes in his shoe before being taken into his cell. The attempt was seen by correctional officers who were watching surveillance cameras, police said.
When the officers returned to the room, Landers was still trying to stuff the tobacco into his shoe, police said.
He was further charged with attempted introduction of contraband into a penal facility.
Landers was being held in the Washington County Detention Center in lieu of $11,000 bond.
