Mitchell Wilber pitched a five-hitter to lead the Junior Toppers to a 9-4 victory against Lexington West (Ky.) in the championship of the Dizzy Dean 16-under Southeast World Series on Sunday at Broyles Field.
Daniel Sweeney and Alex Lindsay also recorded victories on the mound for the Junior Toppers. Sweeney allowed two runs while pitching a three-hitter and Lindsay pitched a complete game, too.
Wilber, also a right fielder, went 7-for-14 with three doubles while helping the Toppers win three of four games in the tournament.
Center fielder J.T. Torbett was 5-for-8 with six walks. Other key contributors were shortstop Tucker McPherson (5-for-14, three doubles), third baseman/pitcher Lindsay (5-for-10) and catcher/outfielder Matt Beaird (5-for-9, three walks).
The Junior Toppers are managed by former Science Hill and East Tennessee State player Tommy Torbett, and include: Harrison Spencer, Nick Misischia, Payton Torbett, Nate Belisle, Harris Galpin, Brad Carter and John Wynd.
All of the Junior Toppers players are rising sophomores and juniors at Science Hill.
