Sullivan County commissioner concerned with rising costs of pauper burials

July 11th, 2011 9:20 am by John Osborne

BLOUNTVILLE — Death and taxes. The old saying is no one can avoid them. But at least one Sullivan County commissioner thinks it is time to try and stop using the taxes paid by some to pay for the death expenses of others.

Sullivan County Mayor Steve Godsey, however, said if the county doesn’t help area hospitals keep their morgues cleared, the state might punish the county by withholding funding for other programs.

The amount of taxpayer dollars used to fund “pauper burials” — they’re mostly cremations these days — in Sullivan County has quadrupled in the past few years.
