TBI looks into missing money from Unicoi Co. Jail

ERWIN — Tennessee Bureau of Investigation officials confirmed Friday that the agency is investigating the report of missing funds from the Unicoi County Jail.

TBI Public Information Officer Josh DeVine said the TBI received a request from District Attorney General Tony Clark on July 23 to request the investigation of a $1,000 cash bond missing from the jail’s fund.

County Sheriff Mike Hensley said he also requested the investigation after the matter of the missing money was brought to his attention by one of the sheriff’s department’s bookkeepers.

“Immediately, we started checking and determined that it was missing,” Hensley said. “When I found that out, I was in contact with Attorney General Clark, and I did request that the TBI come in and investigate it for me.”

Hensley said because the matter is now under investigation, no further information could be provided.

“The main thing is we discovered it missing and when it was discovered missing, I immediately contacted the attorney general and at my request, I requested the TBI,” Hensley said.

DeVine said the investigation is “active and ongoing,” and no further information could be released at this time.
