KNOXVILLE — More than 53,000 people have signed an online petition asking the Tennessee Board of Probation and Parole to keep behind bars a woman who helped carry out the torture slaying of a young Knoxville couple.

Vanessa Coleman has twice been convicted for facilitating the murder of Channon Christian, 21, who was kidnapped, tortured, raped and killed along with her boyfriend, Christopher Newsom, 23, in January 2007.

She is eligible for parole on Oct. 25 and has a hearing on Oct. 8, according to state records.

Coleman was first convicted in 2010, but the verdict was thrown out after the judge presiding over the trial was caught up in a prescription drug scandal. She was re-tried in November 2012 and received a 35-year sentence.
