GREENEVILLE — Blake Drake hit his third home run of the season and Matt Pearce pitched five effective innings as the Johnson City Cardinals cooled off the Greeneville Astros with a 4-1 victory Thursday night at Pioneer Park.
Greeneville, which had won two of three from division-leading Elizabethton and six of seven overall, fell three games behind the Twins, who were rained out at Kingsport. The Astros fell to 21-20. The Cardinals improved to 19-19 and moved past Kingsport into third place in the Appalachian league’s West Division. Johnson City is 31?2 games out.
Drake hit a solo home run as part of a three-run fifth inning. Also in he fifth, Cole Lankford added an RBI double and Jesus Ustariz drove in a run with a groundup
Pearce (2-3) held Greeneville to one run on five hits. He struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.
Johnson City’s first run scored when Casey Grayson walked with the bases loaded.
Jeffry Santos drove in Greeneville’s first run with a fifth-inning single.
