Twins win, Cards washed

The Elizabethton Twins inched a little farther ahead in the Appalachian League West Division standings on Friday night.

The Twins (17-11) defeated the Princeton Rays 4-2 at Hunnicutt Field and increased their lead in the West to three games over the idle Johnson City Cardinals whose game with Pulaski was postponed due to rain.

Princeton fell to 15-12 and a game behind Danville in the East.

Felix Jorge went 42?3 innings as the Twins starter, but reliever C.K. Irby (1-0) was credited with the win after giving up just two hits over 21?3 scoreless innings. Dereck Rodriguez came in the final two innings to earn his second save of the season.

Patrick Grady and Nick Ciuffo each had RBI singles in the bottom of the first to give Princeton a 2-0 lead. The Twins cut the lead to one run in the top of the third with Jeremias Pineda’s solo home run over right field.

Facing two outs in the top of the fifth, Elizabethton pulled ahead with Tyler Kuresa’s two-run single which scored Pat Kelly and Ben Gordon.

Max Murphy added the final run for Elizabethton with a solo home run over left field to lead off the eighth.

Elizabethon will return home to face Burlington today at 6 p.m. Johnson City will also be at home, hosting Bristol today at 7 p.m.
