HOYLAKE, England — Former East Tennessee State golfer Rhys Enoch finished the first round of the British Open at Royal Liverpool Golf Club at 1-over 73.
Enoch, who was in the second-to-last group to tee off on Thursday, enters today’s second round tied for 66th and tees off at 5:54 a.m.
The former Atlantic Sun freshman of the year and four-time all-conference selection had four birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in his debut at golf’s oldest major. Three of his birdies came in a four-hole stretch where he went from 2-over par to even-par on No. 12. He parred five of his last six holes with a bogey coming on 14.
Enoch is seven shots back of leader Rory McIlroy, an ETSU recruiting commitment in 2004, who shot 6-under 66. The cut line is determined by the lowest 70 scores, including ties, in the opening two rounds.comments powered by Disqus
