Police said a man and a woman were found dead in their apartment in what appears to be a murder/suicide.
On Sunday at 3 p.m., Johnson City police officers arrived at 2914 Watauga Road, Apt. 605, to find the residents dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
JCPD Sgt. Kevin Peters said police were notified by a relative of one of the deceased after he or she found the bodies inside the apartment Sunday afternoon. Peters added that officers also found a handgun inside the apartment, though he did not specify as to what kind.
Though the investigation is ongoing, Peters said evidence indicates that one of the two killed the other and then themselves.
“We’re investigating, and it appears it could be a murder-suicide involving the couple that lived there,” Peters said. “We’re just waiting for some more evidence and the autopsy to work out.”
Although officers responded to the discovery of the bodies, Peters said police had not received notification of shots fired in that area Sunday. Despite this, Peters said the investigation indicated that the event took place some time before noon.
“We think sometime earlier (Sunday) ... probably in the morning hours,” Peters said. “We’re not exactly sure what time, but somebody had seen them earlier.”
While initial reports suggested that the event may have been the result of a domestic altercation, Peters said that information could not be confirmed.
“You don’t really know because nobody heard or saw anything,” he said. “Common sense would tell you it probably was, but we can’t say for sure it was right now.”
Peters said the names of the dead were being withheld pending the notification of family members.
