Twins shut out Royals again

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Sam Gibbons fired seven scoreless innings, while Tanner English and Nick Gordon combined for seven of Elizabethton’s 11 hits in a 7-0 win over Burlington on Thursday.

Gibbons allowed just one hit and one walk while racking up seven strikeouts in the Appalachian League contest. He carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but Meibrys Viloria hit a ground-ball single to center field leading off the inning.

Kuo Hua Lo pitched the last two innings for the combination one-hitter. Lo struck out two batters and walked one.

At the plate, English authored a 4-for-5 performance in his professional baseball debut. The 21-year-old from Murrells Inlet, S.C., also hit a homer and scored two runs.

Gordon, the Twins’ first-round draft pick, totaled three hits in five at-bats. He had a double, triple, RBI and scored a pair of runs. He is hitting .323 on the season with a homer and five RBIs.

Also for the Twins, Tyler Kuresa added two hits and drove in a run.

Elizabethton improved to 5-3 on the season, and remained in first place in the West Division.
