Corker proposes higher fuel tax to pay for repairs to highway infrastructure

U.S. Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tennessee)

U.S. Sen. Bob Corker pitched his legislation Wednesday to fix up the nation's highway infrastructure by raising federal fuel taxes by six cents twice in the next two years and paying for the hike with provisions in the so-called "tax extenders" bill.

In a conference call with reporters, the Tennessee Republican insisted the move would cover a shortfall in the federal Highway Trust Fund, which funnels money to state transportation budgets but is expected to run out of cash this summer to pay for projects.

Corker predicted if his bill doesn't pass Congress, about 660,000 jobs would be at risk next year due to a $160 billion hole in state transportation budgets over the next decade.
