Marisa Williams Named Recipient of Second Annual Jerry Shankle Memorial Foundation Scholarship

Marisa Williams

The second annual Jerry Shankle Memorial Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 has been awarded to Marisa Williams. Marisa will be attending East Tennessee State University in the Fall with an anticipated major of Pre-Medicine and a minor in Art. Marisa has an exceptional academic record at Unaka High School including maintaining a 4.0 Grade Point Average while working 25-30 hours per week at a part-time job. She has earned numerous Certificates of Academic Excellence for her coursework and has obtained the highest grade in nine of her courses. A pillar in the Stoney Creek community, Marisa has volunteered her time with the Red Cross Blood Drive for the past three years. She has also been a soup kitchen volunteer, worked at the community carwash, and volunteered with the Angel Tree for the past four years. Most recently, Marisa placed second in the 17th Annual Congressional Art Competition for Tennessee’s First Congressional District.

In the essay part of her application for the scholarship, Marisa writes about what it means to be a Unaka Ranger. Marisa responded, in part, that, “It is the sense of pride you acquire while attending and participating in the school’s various events and activities that linger with you long after graduation and make you proud to be a Unaka Ranger today and forever.” Clearly, Marisa’s love for her school along with her exceptional academic record and community service make her an excellent candidate to receive the second annual Jerry Shankle Memorial Foundation Scholarship.

Marisa is the daughter of Rick and Robin Williams. Her grandparents are Clinton and Joyce Williams and Bob and Oma Jean Woods. She has one brother, Tyler Williams.

Jerry Shankle’s daughter, Beth Shankle Anderson, is the founder and president of The Jerry Shankle Memorial Foundation. She formed this foundation in memory of her late father because of his deep love of Unaka High School and to promote the advancement of its students. Beth currently resides in Tallahassee, Florida where she is an attorney.
