Jeremy Lee Laney
A Washington County investigator said a Kingsport man told deputies he and a teenage girl fondled each other in a sexual encounter in 2013.
On May 30, Washington County sheriff’s deputies arrested Jeremy Lee Laney, 23, 2309 Kendleworth Drive, after receiving reports that he had engaged in sexual activity with the girl from her mother and the state’s Department of Children’s Services.
According to WCSO Investigator Jared Taylor, who handled the investigation into those reports, Laney was living in Washington County with a male friend and his juvenile daughter. The alleged incident took place, Taylor said, in August, when Laney was alone with the girl inside his friend’s house.
“He, I guess, in so many words, was in a position to where he was alone with the juvenile, and asked her if she wanted to touch his penis,” Taylor said. “While she did that, he fondled her.”
Taylor said the girl later told her mother — who is divorced from her father — about the alleged encounter, and the mother reported it to the WCSO. Around the same time, Taylor said, the sheriff’s office received a notification about the alleged incident from the DCS child abuse hotline.
During the subsequent investigation, Taylor said, Laney was brought into the sheriff’s office, at which time he told them he did have a sexual encounter with the girl.
“During the interview process, he did give a verbal confession,” Taylor said.
On May 23, a Washington County grand jury handed down a true bill charging Laney with aggravated sexual battery and soliciting sexual exploitation of a minor. He was arrested May 30 and taken to the Washington County Detention Center, where he was being held on a $40,000 bond. His bond was posted that same day, and he is scheduled to report to Criminal Court on Aug. 1.
