KINGSPORT — Eastman Chemical Company’s Kingsport site experienced a widespread power outage that resulted in an unplanned shutdown of its operations about 10 this morning.

Eastman spokesman Brad Lifford confirmed the outage resulted in a wastewater discharge.

"Power to the wastewater pumps was disrupted...That ended before 11 o'clock," Lifford added.

In a news release, Eastman officials said they were investigating the outage's cause and shutting down manufacturing operations safely.

"Eastman immediately began notifying and cooperating with local, state and federal authorities to ensure public safety," Eastman said in the statement. "There have been no reported injuries. We have no reason to believe this unplanned outage will pose any threat to human health or the environment."

Officials planned to report more details as they became available. Community members may also receive updates by calling the Eastman Care Line at 423-229-2273.
