ERWIN — Five Erwin residents were injured in crash that occurred early Tuesday morning.

According to a release issued Wednesday by Erwin Police Chief Regan Tilson, at around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, Unicoi County 911 received a call about a traffic crash on Lattie Miller Road in Erwin. All of the occupants sustained injury, with three taken from the scene by ground ambulance and the other two flown from the scene by Wings Air Rescue.

Three of the vehicle's occupants were in the back of a 2006 Chevrolet Colorado truck, and the other two occupants were in the front of the truck, Tilson stated. According to Tilson, the truck left the road and overturned several times, ejecting all but one of the occupants in the truck.

Those injured in the crash were Gage L. Hughes, 18, Reanna D. Keever, 19, Samantha R. Allsup, 21, Edward J. Hamby, 21, and Justo L. Perez, 20.

Tilson said the cause of the crash is still under investigation, but it appears that speed was a factor.

"There were serious injuries related to this crash, and our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims and their families," Tilson said.
